Opera House History
Marta Becket rented the recreation hall in 1967, when it was known as Corkhill Hall; shebegan repairs, created the sets, and painted murals on the adobe walls. She renamed it the Amargosa, the original name of the former mining town in which the hall was located. In 1970, journalists from National Geographic discovered Marta doing a performance at the Amargosa Opera House without an audience and were astonished by the beauty of her performace. Their report of the breathtaking performance was published in Life Magazine and led to an international interest in Marta and her theater. Crowds began to attend the opera house and Marta began to perform for audiences from all over the world.
In 1974, Marta completed her murals and established the nonprofit Amargosa Opera House, Inc. to continue the preservation of the property. The nonprofit then bought the town of Death Valley Junction, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places on December 10, 1981.In 1983, the Opera House bought 120 theater seats from the Boulder City Theater in Boulder City, Nevada to replace the worn garden chairsand the official National Register of Historic Places marker for Death Valley Junction was placed.
Even thought Marta Becket is no longer with us, her legacy lives on through the opera house. From Plays to Musical performances, the Amargosa Opera House hosts a variety of wonderful shows fit for the whole family. We welcome you to attend during your stay at the Amargosa Hotel.
